2024 Ammo ban attempt
On January 9th 2024 19 state attorneys signed a letter directed towards the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention urging the office to investigate the contracting with lake city ammo and civilian ammunition distribution. This was initially started by Letitia James and 18 other states attorney generals who signed the letter as well including our state AG Ellen F. Rosenblum of Oregon. The goal initially was to ban certain types of ammunition considered “military grade”. They believed that ammunition was considered a threat to the general population. They claim the ammunition produced at Lake City was the “ammunition of choice for use in mass shootings”. Lake City is a prevalent manufacturer of 5.56X45 the same caliber used in their particular case study.
The one thing that really stands out in this attempt to take ammunition away from citizens is the “military designation”. Considering that if we are using that term correctly, the military uses an abundance of several different calibers including .308, 9mm, 6.5 Creedmoor and .45ACP just to name a few. This designation can be very dangerous when using terms that umbrella other calibers regardless how certain politicians feel about what could be dangerous or more lethal. Calling certain calibers out for someone's violent actions it the equivalent to taking away Hondas because they have more accidents that other manufacturers.

The mass shooting hysteria in 2024 has been sensationalized through news networks and when an event occurs the first look towards the situation is always directed towards the AR-15( The new villain after video games and metal music from 80’s and 90’s hysteria). In this case a major manufacturer of AR-15 ammunition rather than the mental health of the perpetrator or the early signs that in most cases were present take center stage. Specifically citing the Buffalo Massacre where the shooter was a quoted about the penetration power of this 5.56 cartridge. Yet other calibers far more powerful like .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor seemed to be conveniently left out of the conversation. When there is a tragic event there will always be those available ready to exploit and find that scapegoat.
Attacking a major ammunition manufacturer for selling ammunition to civilians (when the manufacturers are well within their rights to do so) presents a false connection to the real issues of “mass shootings” blaming those events on their designation of “military grade” weapons. In actuality this seems more like an ammo grab attempt to disrupt civilian ammunition pipeline and infringe on the rights of lawful gun owners. Even though this happened earlier at the beginning of this year it’s always a testament to the lengths that those in power will go in some cases towards disarmament.
Make sure to keep track of local laws and bills that infringe up on your rights.
